The Book of Generations (Genesis 5)

  • Adam has Seth at 130 years old (he lived to be 930)
  • Seth has Enosh at 105 (and lived to be 912)
  • Enosh has Kenan at 90 (and lived to be 905)
  • Kenan has Mahalalel at 70 (and lived to be 910)
  • Mahalalel has Jared at 65 (and lived to be 895)
  • Jared has Enoch at 162 (and lived to be 962)
  • Enoch has Methuselah at 65 (and lived to be 365)
  • Methuselah has Lamech at 187 (and lived to be 969)
  • Lamech has Noah at 182 (and lived to be 777)
  • Noah has Shem, Ham, and Japheth after he is 500 (and lived to be 950)
Year of fatherhood and lifespan chart

The most obvious anomaly is Enoch. Tied for the earliest fatherhood with Mahalalel and shortest lifespan due to God taking him before he died.

Another interesting fact is the visible trend is the rise in years before having children starting with Jared, with the exception of Enoch. Before Jared, children seem to be born progressively sooner. This may have to do with the understanding that it was in the days of Jared that the Nephilim were born, according to some scholars.

Now, it is worth noting that we don't know exactly when Adam and Eve bore Cain and Able, we only get the year of Seth's birth (which is what this data shows). Given the story of Cain and able it is reasonable to assume that they were both fully grown men which would put Adams fatherhood rate number closer to Seth's, somewhere around 100, at the very least. Their births could have easily been much sooner than that, however, given the implication of many other humans being alive when Cain is cursed and he is afraid someone will kill him because of what he has done.

Interesting Take Aways

  • Adam would have witnessed the Nephilim corrupting humanity and the earth for around 470 years.
  • Noah was the first Godly man mentioned in the Bible not to have met Adam, or Seth for that matter.
  • Noah grew up in a world where the giant Nephilim had already existed for around 596 years.
  • Noah lived longer than Adam, Seth, and all of his ancestors that are mentioned aside from Jared and Methuselah who beat him by 12 and 19 years respectively.
  • Noah waited WAY longer than any of his forefathers did before having kids. Methuselah is runner up and Noah waited 313 years longer than him.
  • Noah lived for 350 years after the flood.
  • Lamech knew Adam for the shortest period of time (56 years from birth) before he died.
  • The Nephilim roamed the earth for around 1196 years before the flood.
  • If the book of Enoch is true in saying that the sons of God who fathered the Nephilim were punished in his lifetime then the Nephilim would have gone on without them for at the very least 669 years and the sons of God would only have lived with their children for circa 200 to 527 years max.
